Enemies and allies in the hospital

At the beginning of the game, users do not yet realize that almost all the characters in Outlast will want to kill the main character. The first dangerous opponent is Chris Walker - a huge monster who was once a man. He will appear within the first hour of the game and will be able to kill the character in two hits. At higher difficulty levels this number decreases. After moving through the hospital, Miles will meet Dr. Rick Trager.

He will pretend to be a friend, but later he will tie up the main character in his office and begin to torture him. Alshir is more afraid of him, because when the doctor appears close, the man begins to scream madly and fall into hysterics.

The last and most dangerous enemy is considered to be Walrider. This deity kills crazed patients with one blow and can seep through cracks into any room. Among other enemies, it is also worth noting the twin brothers, who have incredible strength.

Of course, not all characters in Outlast want to kill the main character. The only ally inside the building will be Father Martin, who will tell you a lot of information and give missions.

Blake Langermann

In the second part, the characters of Outlast 2 look no less impressive, although the theme has been changed. The basis of the plot was the madness on the basis of religion, into which the main character Blake Langermann fell. He, being a journalist, went to investigate the terrible murder of a girl who was found on a deserted road. The fact of her pregnancy added urgency to the matter, and Blake decided to find the truth in this matter on his own.

The trail led him to the Arizona desert, where he and his wife went by helicopter. Due to a disaster, the vehicle crashes. The main character woke up in one of the canyons completely alone. He needed help and information, and so he went to the nearest village.

It is in this locality that all the terrible events and crazy things that the hero has to endure take place. He will face two opposing religious sects. The people in them are completely mad and listen only to the voice of their leader. They don’t like strangers, and therefore will try to kill him at every opportunity. Blake is trying with all his might to find out what happened to his wife Lynn, and is ready to sacrifice himself for this.

Other characters in the sequel

As in the first part, the characters in Outlast 2 are unfriendly to the hero and want to kill him at the slightest opportunity. The only ally during his entire stay in the village was Ethan, who decided to help, because Blake told him the fate of his daughter

Since the announcement Outlast 2 we were promised more different locations, stealth, a variety of enemies, and of course... a bloodier and more frightening story. In turn, the demo version, which appeared in October, revealed new facts to fans: what was happening on the screen looked more impressive than the original game as a whole. But let's find out if the final version of Outlast 2 is that good - we've already completed it!

Something terrible is coming...

Let's start with the fact that running away from an unkillable or invulnerable monster is one of the main mechanics in the horror genre. She performed well in a number of classic games: the series Clock Tower And Amnesia use the chase as the main method of active interaction with the player. Well, all you can do is run away, hide and, of course, be afraid.

The first part of Outlast is basically built on the same thing. And, although critics recognized the game as one of the best horror films of 2013, many noted the excessive “corridor” from beginning to end. The formula is this: hide and seek from monsters - obligatory exposition - escape from the boss. Towards the end there was less hide and seek and more chases.

Everyone hates journalists

Literally from the first frames it is clear that the creators of Outlast 2 and Resident Evil 7 thought along similar lines. We are given the same starting hook (to save a loved one) and a hint of paranormal activity. Why, the events of the games take place almost in neighboring states! And, of course, the whole world is trying to kill one unfortunate reporter.

Outlast 2 immediately throws the player into hell: hide and hide, no one will explain anything to you! Apparently, everyone independently, without prompting, must figure out the stealth system, the classification of pursuers, as well as what attracts their attention.

The enemies are divided into four groups: religious fanatics, Satanists, plague-infected and "bosses", but do not let the appearance of the characters fool you, in reality they mean little. It is much more important to understand who is in front of you from a mechanical point of view: a plot or scripted enemy or a simple “dummy” who was assigned to patrol the area. Even at a high difficulty level, the second type is not a problem. They will not chase you for more than ten meters; they will turn around and leave as soon as they lose sight of the hero. This behavior from bots is often very comical.

But encounters with plot “monsters” will become a nightmare even for experienced players. You will have to die many times until you remember the behavior pattern and operating principle of each enemy. How else can you deal with them, if such enemies see 180 degrees, hear everything and, as a rule, kill you with one or two attacks. More often with one.

And this makes the game more annoying than scary. The first two or three deaths in each skirmish still leave an alarming aftertaste, but after that there is nothing but discontent. The traps prepared for the player are built in such a way that it is almost impossible to pass them the first time. On the one hand, perhaps this is a reflection of the developers’ desire to make the threat real, on the other hand, the complexity should be justified.

Endless repetitions rob the player of any sense of excitement. After all, the game doesn’t even give hints on how to move forward. And when in a huge location you need to find a single tiny passage, an unfortunate hole in the fence, it becomes simply unbearable.

The horror is in the details

From time to time the game still manages to seriously scare you. This happens more often in the early chapters: a silhouette in a passage, a sudden shadow, an ominous sound that gradually becomes louder. A particularly formidable opponent is Sister Mary, the first of your “acquaintances.”

In terms of voice acting, the creators of Outlast 2 did an excellent job. Stereotypically creepy voices only add to the overall atmosphere of devilry. But the protagonist sounds weaker: frightened breathing during stealth episodes is very much in the theme, but the reaction to another dismembered corpse is too... ordinary. It's like he's already used to it. Well, what’s there, we’re used to it too.

The atmosphere makes you more nervous than horrified. The game has quite depressing visual and sound design, as well as plot moves. The baby-killing cult, crazy cannibalistic Satanists, and the protagonist's personal nightmare that haunts us in the "transitional" parts of the plot are well done, but typical. It seems that the Outlast series is duplicating "American Horror Story" in two parts: first an episode about a madhouse, now about religious fanatics somewhere in the southern United States.

Children and babies are not safe. Especially children and babies.

And although the game is gradually leaning more and more towards the film Omen, what is happening feels completely different, largely due to the changed color and sound schemes. The gameplay is constantly speeding up, leaving less and less time for exploration. The developers sacrificed horrific details for long chases and exposition. It's a pity!

Chase, chase, chase!

Haste is the game's most annoying flaw. The rest—the monstrous villains and events—has potential. Outlast 2 could easily stand on a par with the cult Silent Hill and the already mentioned Omen, but suspense, agonizing anticipation and ominous hints also faded into the background.

Even the ending, which was clearly intended to be a plot “hydrogen bomb,” turned out to be crumpled. Open spaces, areas for exploration and secret passage remain the same corridors with invisible walls and fixed entry and exit points. Script enemies towards the end no longer hesitate to teleport behind your back. After their sudden appearance, you have very little time to escape: if you hesitate, you will die; if you take a wrong turn in the dark, you will die.

The most offensive thing here is that in the genre there are a lot of modern and classic examples of how a helpless character in a mortally dangerous situation survives against all odds, and at the same time you really fear for him.

The problem is not that horror films lack spectacle or adrenaline. If Clock Tower with 16-bit graphics on the SNES managed to become a cult game, it means that the point is still in the approach to how to scare the player. Obviously not with long corridor chases, exaggerated violence and religious references, which are not easy to even comprehend due to the frantic pace of the game.

Outlast 2 is a good game that doesn't let the player relax from start to finish. But it offers everything the same as four years ago, only with improved graphics, sound and a couple of new features.

Unfortunately, excitement and periodic surges of adrenaline cannot be equated with a full-fledged feeling of fear. Therefore, when evaluating a horror film, you need to honestly count how many times the author of the review was sincerely scared (and did not curse at the jump scare).
