The nature of things is such that these people are simply unable to exist together. They say that opposites attract, and there is some truth in this saying. But, as a rule, they forget to add that for coexistence it is not enough to simply love each other. True love implies condescension, respect and tolerance for each other’s small weaknesses, and not at all the desire to remake the other person to fit your mold. They don't understand how they can live in such inaction. I think that Ilya Ilyich himself does not fully understand the reasons for his behavior, which at first glance is passive and apathetic, but in reality turns out to be a deep subconscious protest against the world of commercialism and philistinism. Oblomov contrasts soulless activity with spirituality and humanity, precisely those qualities that today can easily be considered “extra” character traits that complicate life.

The bet with Stolz spurs Olga on; she tries with all her might to impose her system of values ​​on Oblomov, which for the most part represent material comfort and “education.” All this implies the so-called life of the mind, but not the life of the soul. Olga fell in love with herself as a “creator” in Oblomov, because it is always pleasant to look at the result of her labors and see in him a continuation of herself, and most likely did not even notice the tender, touching, deep and sincere love of Ilya Ilyich, which, with minimal tact and respect, may , and could transform it. The persistent pressure on Oblomov, to which Olga subjected the unfortunate man, and the resulting feeling of unaccountable resistance forced Oblomov to almost flee.

Truly, love is a great creative force, but this is true only if love is a sincere and pure feeling, and not an attempt to educate. Oblomov fell in love when Olga sang Casta Diva at his first reception with the Ilyinskys. A unique symbol of their love was the lilac branch mentioned several times on the pages of the novel, either on Olga’s embroidery during a meeting in the park, or abandoned by the heroine and picked up by Ilya Ilyich.

The thirst for a sleepy, serene state turned out to be more valuable than romantic happiness. Oblomov sees the ideal of existence as follows: “man sleeps serenely.”

With her departure, the main character still doesn’t find anything to do with what he has left and again lies idle all day long and sleeps on his favorite sofa in St. Petersburg, in the house of the owner Agafya Pshenitsyna. However, such battles took place in Oblomov’s soul that Ilyinskaya could not imagine. He thought about such complex questions, his thoughts went so far that Stolz would have gone mad. Ilya didn’t need a wife who throws hysterics and doesn’t know what she wants. In the depths of his soul, he was looking for a companion whom not only Ilya Ilyich himself would love, but who, for her part, accepted him as he was, without trying to change him. This is the ideal love in Oblomov’s life.

So it turns out that the hero loved Olga sincerely, in a way that no one else loved and could love, and she wanted to heal him, and then, when he was on the same “level” with her, to love him. And Ilyinskaya paid dearly for this when Oblomov died, she realized that she loved him exactly as he was, with all his obvious shortcomings.

But Ilya Ilyich, perhaps due to his sensitivity, and perhaps because he was much older than the girl, was the first to understand that he could become a burden for her, a ballast that would pull her towards the hated “Oblomovism” and would not be able to give her that happiness which she dreams of.

The relationship between Oblomov and Olga Ilyinskaya was a spontaneous but fleeting feeling, as evidenced by the fact that they met in the spring and separated in late autumn. Their love was truly like a fragile lilac branch, which, having given the world its beauty, inevitably fades.

The relationship between Oblomov and Agafya Pshenitsyna had a completely different character than the stormy, bright, memorable love between Ilya Ilyich and Olga. The main reason for Ilya Ilyich’s wallowing in “Oblomovism” and the gradual disintegration of him as a person lie not in Agafya’s excessive concern, but in the hero himself. Already at the beginning of the work, he does not behave like a person interested in the world around him, his soul has long lived in the world of dreams, and he himself does not even try to return to real life. Love, as a reviving feeling, should have awakened the hero, freed him from Oblomov’s half-asleep, however, it was already too late (remember the words of Olga, who said that he had died a long time ago). Olga Ilyinskaya's love did not change Oblomov, although it temporarily brought him out of his usual apathetic state. The reader of the novel can observe the evolution of Olga’s feelings: curiosity, the desire to “awaken” led to passion, the feeling that flared up in her makes her more persistent and stubborn. In Olga’s mind, a comparison arises between her situation and Pygmalion’s: “This is some kind of Galatea, with whom she herself has to be Pygmalion,” she thinks with annoyance.
What does Olga offer Oblomov in exchange for him lying on the sofa? Alas, the program for awakening the “statue” in Olga’s clever head is completely exhausted by Stoltsev’s horizon: reading newspapers, books, working on organizing the estate, going to the order. But St. Petersburg life for Ilya Ilyich is “an eternal game of trashy passions”, “an empty shuffling of days”, far from his ideal.
For him, happiness is freedom, rest and peace, which are the goal of human vanity, passions, wars, trade and politics. This understanding of happiness is characteristic not only of Goncharov’s hero. One can recall Tsar Dadon from Pushkin’s “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel,” who “in his old age wanted to take a break from military affairs and arrange peace for himself,” or Lermontov’s “I would like freedom and peace.” In the epilogue of “War and Peace” L.N. In Tolstoy, we see Natasha Rostova plump, sagging, having lost her former fire, but acquiring an expression of calm softness and clarity on her face, and we learn that all her impulses “had their beginning only in the need to have a family, to have a husband.” Therefore, Oblomov cannot be remade by empty vanity and painful worries that deprive a person of integrity.
Gods in ancient myth revived Galatea, seeing the boundless and reckless love of Pygmalion. But Olga Ilyinskaya’s love is too rational: she reflects on her feelings, on her influence on Oblomov, on her “mission” - to save Ilya Ilyich. In her thoughts about love there is vanity and narcissism (“She instantly weighed her power over him, and she liked this role of a guiding star, a ray of light that she would pour over a stagnant lake and be reflected in it”), calling into question the absoluteness of her feelings. Such love cannot be reckless. This is also one of the reasons that Olga-Pygmalion never manages to revive Galatea-Oblomov.
Oblomov is more naive in his feelings, simpler than Olga, despite the fact that she is much younger than him. But dependence on a woman of this type results in the need to constantly prove one’s intellectual and business worth, and this is painful for Ilya Ilyich. This is largely why he chose to stay in the house on the Vyborg side.
Marrying Olga would not have changed Oblomov; in the end, she herself understood this. A person cannot be remade, and Olga did not want to accept Ilya Ilyich as he is, and this made their marriage, for which there were no external obstacles, impossible.
